In the early 20th century, the
Elizabeth City harbor rivaled Baltimore as one of the major shipping
ports on the east coast. In 1900, the Wright brothers were welcomed here
on their way to the Outer Banks. One hundred years later, the City of
Elizabeth City is now known as “The Harbor of Hospitality”.
This friendly
waterfront town offers 48-hour complimentary dockage and a warm welcome
from the Elizabeth City Rose Buddies at Mariner’s Wharf. The Rose
Buddies have brought the city international recognition for hospitality.
One can do more than
smell roses, however, while enjoying the slower pace of life along
tree-lined streets. Stroll through the city’s six National Historic
Register Districts and experience real-life America set against
antebellum homes accented by colorful dogwoods, azaleas and
crape-myrtles. And view turn-of-the-century commercial buildings along
Main Street, housing specialty shops and restaurants thriving among
banks, the county and federal courthouses, post office and library.
The diverse history of
the surrounding 13-county Albemarle region is highlighted in the
exhibits of the Museum of the Albemarle – including pirates,
agriculture and the life-saving operations of the U.S. Coast Guard.
Recreational
opportunities abound with hunting, fishing and boating – even motor
sports.
You can also go beyond
earthly bounds by exploring Elizabeth City State University’s
Planetarium. In addition, there are numerous plays, lectures and jazz
concerts, along with art exhibits and garden shows at such venues as
College of the Albemarle’s Auditorium, Elizabeth City State
University’s Fine Arts Complex, and Pasquotank Arts Council Gallery,
which is home to local theater group Encore Theater Company.
