Tyrrell County has always been a rural area , with hundreds of miles of unspoiled inland coastline.

Thousands of acres in the county are part of the million+ acres on the Albemarle-Pamlico peninsula that are protected as refuges or parks, and thousands more are managed as timberlands. Huge tracts of farmland also provide wildlife habitat.

And one of North Carolina's largest natural lakes, Phelps Lake, lies on the Tyrrell / Washington county boundary, ringed by rare ecosystems like juniper forests and pocosins.

These are some of the most beautiful natural settings in the world. 

Columbia, NC - The CTCRC is housed in the renovated Columbia Theater, a former movie palace that had fallen into disrepair. The focus of the CTCRC is on human interaction with the environment on the upper Albemarle-Pamlico peninsula, especially as witnessed through the heritage of farming, fishing, and forestry. Center for the Sounds
Columbia, NC - Located on the Scuppernong River, the facility includes a visitor center, wildlife exhibits, Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge film and nature store (The Bears Den).
Palmetto-Peartree Preserve
Columbia, NC - The Preserve encompasses nearly 10,000 acres bordered by the Albemarle Sound and the Little Alligator River and was established to protect the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Community activities include general recreation, hunting, and fishing. Operated by The Conservation Fund.
Scuppernong River
Interpretive Trail
Columbia, NC - A 3/4-mile loop through a pristine bottomland swamp along the Scuppernong River. Interpretive signs explain the workings of the blackwater swamp ecosystem and encourage visitors to look, listen and learn while they stroll through nature's garden.
Pocosin Arts
Columbia, NC - Exhibits and classes. Open studio experience with weaving, pottery and paint your own dinnerware. Retreat workshops combining field and studio experiences which promote understanding of the Pocosin environment and its people.
Emily and Richardson Preyer Buckridge Reserve
Columbia, NC - Located approximately 15 miles south of Columbia, the Emily and Richardson Preyer Buckridge Reserve is the largest single property and the first inland site in the North Carolina Coastal Reserve. The site maintains habitat for special concern, rare, threatened or endangered species including the red wolf, bald eagle, red-cockaded woodpecker Atlantic and shortnose sturgeons and American alligator.
