Big Mill Bed & Breakfast
Big Mill Bed & Breakfast sits amid acres of farmland and forest in the quiet coastal plain of North Carolina, 100 miles east of Raliegh and 100 miles south of Norfolk in an area where streams and rivers meander through cypress swamps and fertile farmland. Guests can explore over 200 acres of woods, landscaped gardens, old barns or simply drop a line in one of the two large lakes just outside the B&B. Seventy-eight year old pecan trees , planted by Chloe's parents, still shade the B&B in summer and in winter they proffer luscious pecans used in making the breads served to the guests.

Big Mill Bed & Breakfast

Each room has a private entrance, individual climate control, private bath and its own wetbar of Portuguese, Spanish or Mexican hand-decorated tiles. The artist's touch is evident everywhere you look : in hand stenciled floors, walls faux painted to create a look of crumbling plaster and stained glass doors which shed an amber glow from the afternoon sun. In winter you can sit by a fire on the large stone fireplace in the suite and see Canada geese as they land on the lake. On a balmy summer day you can stroll amid the trees or under the grapevine in the orchard and smell the Cape Jasmine and watch the purple martins swooping through the air.

The owner once sailed and cooked aboard a private yacht , and the rooms are reminiscent of these Caribbean experiences. If you want to experience more of the Carolina feeling , just ask how to find the local flavors, whether collards and corned backbone, herring roe and hushpuppies or banana fritters.

Big Mill is a quiet getaway and a great stop enroute to the Outer Banks. Whether for business or for pleasure, this is elegant country living at its best. Prices range from $55.00 to $70.00 per night.
